Description
Whale sharks have typically been hunted for their fins, oil and skin. The demand for their fins has led overfishing and a decline in their populations. Around the Yucatan Peninsula we can see whale sharks in large numbers as they migrate to the “Afuera” to feast on fish eggs during the summer months. These gentle giants are currently listed as a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and conservation is imperative to ensure their continued survival. Therefore, it is important that we do our best to protect these amazing animals. By joining this expedition, not only will you learn from Mexico’s own whale shark expert, Rafael De La Parra, but you can rest assured that you are helping to fund Rafael’s much needed research and will even get to help collect essential data needed to protect the whale sharks.
Some of the citizen science activities that you as a supporter can participate in:
- Photo-identification
- Estimation of length using laser pointers
- Collection of environmental parameters
- Skin parasite collection
- Plankton analysis
Whilst on route to look for whale sharks you will have the chance to spot a whole host of other animals including sea turtles, dolphins, mantas, eagle rays, huge fish schools and sea birds. Your marine biologist and ocean experts will be on board to provide you with a some super interesting facts about these animals and also how you can help protect them. Once we find these amazing creatures your task will be to assist Rafael with his research on documenting various aspects of the whale shark’s behavior and physiology, including its size, markings, and any signs of injury or illness. You may also be given the opportunity to take photos and videos of the majestic creature, or take samples! Back on the boat, you work alongside the research team to analyze your findings, comparing them with existing data. Every observation you make contributes to a growing body of knowledge that helps inform conservation efforts and protect whale sharks for future generations.
After the expedition is completed and we pull into the harbor, you will feel a profound sense of fulfillment, knowing that your efforts have played a crucial role in understanding and protecting these magnificent animals. The whale shark citizen science expedition has not only been an adventure of a lifetime but a meaningful step toward the conservation of our oceans and their extraordinary inhabitants.
