Description
Snorkeling on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef promises an enchanting and awe-inspiring underwater experience. As one of the largest coral reef systems in the world, stretching from the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico to Honduras, this reef offers a kaleidoscope of marine life and vibrant coral formations. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is renowned for its diverse and colorful coral formations, ranging from delicate sea fans to massive brain corals. These corals create a mesmerizing underwater landscape, providing a haven for a multitude of marine species.
Your tour begins with a short boat ride out to the reef, as your marine biologist guide Angie provides you with information on the various species of coral, fish, and other marine life, as well as explain their roles within the ecosystem.
As you snorkel along, you’ll be surrounded by a flurry of marine life. Schools of tropical fish, resplendent in a rainbow of colors, weave through the coral formations. Graceful sea turtles may glide by, moving effortlessly through the water. If you’re lucky, you might even encounter majestic rays gracefully patrolling the sandy seabed.
You will snorkel on two different reefs, helping your biologist count some of the most important species on the reef. When you get back to the beach you will assist Angie as she fills out her important citizen science data sheet which helps us to understand how healthy the reef is. Then it’s time to have a snack and look in the books to see which species you found on the reef.
This activity is not only a beautiful and educational experience, but kiddies can also contribute to data collection efforts, such as documenting coral health and fish species observed. All of this date is important if we are to save the coral reefs.
