Marine biology course for kids (Drop in class)

$24.00

Since 2020 We Love the Sea has provided innovative and engaging educational ocean programs for hundreds of kids that come from all walks of life. We believe that kids who are exposed to nature are more inclined to care about the environment as adults. In today’s urbanized and digital age, it requires a significant effort to ensure that children are forming this connection to the marine environment. Our immersive and transformative educational experiences are perfect for the youth of today. Why? Because they provide diverse and hands-on learning opportunities that enable participants to physically dive in, get their feet wet and experience inspiring ocean adventures in their own backyard.

Our entry-level courses introduce young people to the joys of connecting to the ocean. Our courses cover everything from marine biology classes, beach cleaning, rockpooling, coral reef surveying, snorkeling and apnea training. The theoretical aspect is just the first step to get them a little more aware of what they will see out there in the ocean. It is not only important to teach the theory, but to also provide hands-on experience so we can see how knowledge transmits into action.

Description

Our courses are based in Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen and cover everything from marine biology classes, beach cleaning, rockpooling, coral reef surveying, snorkeling and apnea training. The theoretical aspect is just the first step to get them a little more aware of what they will see out there in the ocean. It is not only important to teach the theory, but to also provide hands-on experience so we can see how knowledge transmits into action.

In our programs students will learn about different marine animals, how they communicate, what they eat, and where they live. They will also learn how they can help protect the ocean and its animals through everyday actions. Courses cover the following:

    • Marine Ecology: a dive into marine ecosystems, coral reefs, marine life, and the interconnectedness of ocean systems.

    • Biodiversity: exploration of the variety of marine species, highlighting their importance to the overall health of the oceans.

    • Human Impact: discussions on the impact of human activities on marine environments, including plastic pollution and overfishing.

  • Hands-On Activities:

    • Beach Cleanups: we engage our students in practical activities such as cleaning up beaches to instill a sense of responsibility for the environment.

    • Eco-friendly Crafts: we encourage creativity with crafts that emphasize the use of recycled materials and sustainable practices.

  • Extra field Trips:

    • Akumal turtle snorkel expedition and reef snorkel.

    • We take our students on educational snorkel trips to explore marine environments and understand the importance of responsible tourism.

We Love the Sea is passionate about outdoor education, we believe that Mother Nature is a great teacher and getting kids outside to learn through play and exploration is good for their brains and their bodies. It not only provides an exciting and engaging means of learning, but can also have a positive influence on their psychological health and wellbeing. Our outdoor education programs foster a greater connection with nature, while science subjects include the study of the ocean environment, there’s no doubt that watching fishes swimming around the coral reef is infinitely better than simply looking at textbook pictures. Whilst participating in our marine biology activities, students are given the chance to experience nature not just as an observer, but as part of it. They are able to gain an understanding of their role in the world and be inspired to actively care for nature, rather than just passively admire it. As a result, they can feel more connected not only to the environment but also to other people who share the world with them

Prerequisites:

Participants should have a basic swimming ability and be comfortable in open water. No prior snorkeling or marine biology knowledge is required.
